Eyeing Your Computer Screen
People are becoming more and more dependent on computers and the Internet, which means increasing numbers of us are spending more and more time staring at a computer screen.
Although using a computer is not harmful to eyes, staring at a computer screen for long periods can contribute to eyestrain. It may cause eyes to become dry, irritated, or even lead to headaches. As much as we may enjoy time spent on the computer, most of us would probably agree that it can be hard on the eyes.
The following ideas may help you avoid or ease eye strain the next time you’re at your computer for a lengthy period.
A few helpful suggestions…
- Size matters. Increasing the size of text on your screen can help with eye strain. Most computer programs allow you to do so.
- Think about positioning. Make sure your computer screen is about one arm’s length away from your eyes. It helps to have the center of the screen a few degrees below eye level.
- Avoid dry eye. To keep your eyes from drying out, remember to blink. Most people blink far less often than usual while focusing on the computer screen. If your eyes feel dry, try using artificial tears eye drops.
- Take frequent breaks. Stop to focus on something other than the computer screen for a few seconds. Practice the 20-20-20 rule. Take a 20-second break every 20 minutes and look at something at least 20 feet away.
- Pay attention to lightening. A room should be well lit, but not so bright as to cause glare on the screen or eye discomfort.
- Have regular eye exams. Always make sure to have your eyes checked annually by a medical professional.
