A Little Glow in the Dark Helps

As decades upon decades pass, many people find getting around in the dark increasingly more challenging. The natural aging process often affects the strength of our eyesight at the very same time of life that we find ourselves sleeping less and getting up more at night. It takes more and more light to see as well as we did in our younger days.

Aging-related changes in vision can easily lead to nighttime mishaps around the house that can be perilous or cause injury. It is vital in later years to avoid walking around in the dark. We must have some light to guide us as we get older.

When you don’t want to turn on glaring ceiling lights or lamps, strategically placed nightlights can be of tremendous benefit. Adding some fluorescent glow-in-the-dark enhancements here and there can also help. Such additions are essentially invisible in daylight but show up brightly at night when lights are off.

You don’t have to install a whole new lighting system in your home to improve the situation. Simply adding a bit of glow-in-the-dark tape or paint in areas where you walk at night can help you feel more comfortable navigating your surroundings. Darkened areas can become less daunting when there’s a glow to follow. Just getting up from bed to use the restroom or grab a glass of water can feel less daunting. Glow-in-the-dark paints and tape are available online or at hardware stores and home centers.

Spots where an extra glow may help...

  • Light switches and lampshades. Turning on a light offers the absolute best way to illuminate your way, but sometimes it’s hard to find a light switch or lamp in the dark. Just add a dab of glow-in-the dark paint on a
switch or lampshade and you’ll never have trouble finding either one again.

  • Flashlights. Keeping a flashlight near your bed or favorite chair is always a good idea. But, in the dark, you might have to fumble around to find the flashlight. It won’t be hard to locate if it has some glow-in-the-dark tape wrapped around it.

  • Doorknobs. Who hasn’t had to pass a hand across a door a few times in the dark before finally grabbing the knob to open it? You’ll be able to zero right in on any doorknob that has been adorned with some glow-in-the-dark paint or tape.

  • The base of walls. Pilots can safely land visually at night when needed when runways are outlined with light. Some glow-in-the-dark tape placed along the bottom of your hallway walls can do the same thing for you.

  • Staircases. Traversing a flight of stairs or even managing a room’s raised platform when its dark can be problematic. Marking the edges of steps with glow-in-the-dark tape will make it a whole lot easier to scale them at night.
